What instruments are in the orchestra?
The orchestra is made up of stringed instruments such as violin, viola, cello, and bass. When we put together a "Full Orchestra" we combine with members from the band program.
What about guitar?
If you already play guitar, that is a benefit as your fingers will already have the dexterity to move on a string. Guitars are not part of the orchestra; however, bass guitar has the same strings as the string bass and all of our bass players will have the opportunity to learn and play bass guitar if they wish as it does get used in some of our pieces.
Do I need any musical experience to join orchestra?
No! We teach you everything you need to know right from the beginning of how to open your case to how to read music. 98 percent of our students started with no experience at all in our beginner classes.
How much time will this take outside of school?
Orchestra class meets every day as a class during the school day just like math and science. We have 2-3 concerts a year and only 2 outside of school rehearsals (beginner year only). Aside from that, the amount of practicing done outside of class will impact how good you become at your instrument. Most beginners practice about 15 minutes a day outside of class. Most students end up doing more, because practicing is FUN!
What if I play the piano?
If you have piano experience you would be great in the orchestra program. Not only would it be easier for you to learn your new stringed instrument, but you will also have some opportunities as they arise to perform with the orchestra on piano depending on your level of piano proficiency.
Is orchestra expensive? What if I can't afford it?
Most students rent their instruments from area music stores. There are very affordable options for every instrument. Do not let the cost stop you from being in orchestra. If there are financial issues, contact Mrs. Zamora at kzamora@mckinneyisd.net and we will help you find an instrument that works with your budget.
How do I know what size instrument I play?
All violins, violas, cellos and basses come in many different sizes. Contact a director to help measure you to see what size would be most comfortable for you. Also, if you choose to play cello and bass, you would have one at home and one at school so you wouldn't need to worry about transporting it daily.
